Serve

Ready to Volunteer?

We’re so glad you want to serve with us. We hope you’ll find community with other volunteers, make a difference at Valley and in our city, and ultimately, help us transform the world with the hope of the Gospel.

If you have questions about volunteering or would like to join a volunteer group, please feel free to contact Rev. Wren at wren.clanton@umcna.org or 256.883.0690.

Volunteer at Valley

Hospitality. Do you love greeting people or serving as an usher?  Do you naturally look for ways to provide hospitality to others?  Become a greeter, usher, or part of the snack fellowship team!

Worship. Do you feel a pull to helping with communion, set up for worship, or arranging flowers and decorations?  Join the worship setup team!

Children’s and Youth Ministry. Do you love working with children or youth? We have a full program of care and ministry to the children and teens who attend Valley. Whether you could help provide snack suppers for our monthly youth programs, support the children’s Nursery Care team, help lead in children’s church, or do curriculum prep for special events like Music & Arts Camp, then we would love to welcome you!

Please note: all volunteers and staff that work with children and youth undergo a background check and are required to follow “Safe Sanctuary” rules.  This is for the safety of our children, youth, and volunteers.

Prayer & Care. Do you long to find ways to pray more intentionally for others?  Do you have a gift for visiting those who are sick, in the hospital, or home-bound?  We would love to plug you into our prayer and care volunteer group!  Whether you’re willing to write cards to those who have faced loss and illness or you’d like to join a circuit of prayer warriors, then this is the volunteer spot for you!

Volunteer in the Community

At 305 8th Street, three residential homes serve as a sanctuary for a diverse group of disabled adults who are not eligible for state assistance for housing.  These amazing individuals have found a home and community of support through 305 8th Street.  Annually, Valley fills the Christmas list needs of the residents (often they are simple requests such as toiletries, socks, and blankets), and helps provide and serve meals to the residents.

Downtown Rescue Mission is a homeless shelter that provides emergency services to individuals and families in need of shelter, food, clothing, and long-term rehabilitation for recovering addicts.  Along with crisis and addiction support, this Christ-centered non-profit has a transitional assistance program that helps those who are homeless to get off the streets permanently.  Annually, Valley holds food and blanket drives to support the immediate needs of this mission partner.  There are also regular service opportunities to feed the residents and minister to them in worship.

St. Mark’s Food Pantry is a community network of churches that supports a local alternative to those in need of food assistance in our community.  Valley collects food items monthly according to a specific list of needs, and volunteers deliver them to the host site, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.  Annually, the food pantry supplies 250 local families with much-needed food and supplies.

We need monthly volunteers to bring in needed items to fill multiple carts for delivery to the Pantry.

Jones Valley Elementary School is the local public school that serves the children of the community around Valley. There are annual school supply needs that Valley meets through School Supply Drives.

We need volunteers to help coordinate the school supply drive and deliver the supplies before the beginning of the new school year.

2nd Mile Giving. During the first Sunday of the month, during communion, a special offering is taken up to support the missions and ministries of the Larger United Methodist Denomination. These include Africa University Fund, Birmingham Southern College and Huntingdon College, United Methodist Children’s Home, World Service Fund, and the Servants Like Jesus Mission.

We need volunteers to help connect the congregation with these regional, national, and international missions.
